Coastal Plains Outdoor School offers immersive, hands-on outdoor experiences that help people develop a deeper relationship with the land, with themselves and with each other. By exploring the interdependence of our natural and cultural heritage, we cultivate knowledge, awareness and skills to help people build more healthy and sustainable communities.
“When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.” -Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac (1949)
Natural Heritage
Our programs strive to provide foundational awareness and knowledge of the Gulf Coastal Plains natural communities and the interconnectivity of soils, plants, animals, weather and more. We believe that building a healthy relationship with the land begins by paying close attention and giving ourselves the freedom to express curiosity, wonder, and joy in the natural world. We hope that by studying the natural world (and our place in it), we can build a deeper sense of place and a shared commitment to steward the land for future generations. |
Cultural Heritage
The story of the people who have lived on and from the land is as rich and complex as the landscape itself. With a foundation in natural heritage, we can more fully appreciate the many settlement patterns, economic history and folk traditions of the region. By experiencing the many ways in which people have interacted with the land over time, we are able to develop a deeper connection to place and to our ancestors. To this end, we believe that it is critical to engage members of surrounding communities and give them the opportunity to share their story.

Living Practice
We firmly believe that the most appropriate and healthy relationship with the land is through active engagement. We seek to practice in our daily lives the skills and traditions that ensure the health of families, communities and the land that sustains us. To this end, we will offer classes that help individuals and families learn about sustainable land management and agriculture, native plant propagation and use, and other practical skills in foraging, forestry, woodworking, and home economics. |
